If you’re like me, and have ever wandered into your local chandlery, or hardware store, or superstore looking for an all-purpose spray cleaner and found yourself instead swimming in a sea of cleaning solutions—each designed for a specific job—then the November issue of Practical Sailor, now available online at www.practical-sailor.com has something for you. (No, it isn’t a snorkel, although that might help.)
Searching for a single cleaner that can tackle most dirty boat jobs, we tested a total of 15 spray cleaners from 11 manufacturers—including eco-friendly cleaners, concentrated formulas, degreaser-cleaners, and even one homebrew formula. To get an idea of how they would stand up to real-world tasks, the products were tested on grease and grime on a variety of surfaces: fiberglass, rubber, vinyl, and Formica. We also measured the pH balance of each cleaner to find out which products were best suited for certain applications. Finally, we tested to see what happened to our boat’s wax finish when we applied each cleaner. (No good news there.) With multiple data tables presenting the test findings, the report offers PS’s picks for the best general cleaner, the best green cleaner, and the product that offers the best clean for the buck.
That narrows the choices to three, which I believe is a much more sensible number to deal with.

Marine Cordage: Testers Examine Running Rigging Options
Exploring the world of halyards and sheets, Practical Sailor tested 26 different varieties of braided rope from four manufacturers: Yale Cordage, Samson Rope, Novatech Braids, and New England Ropes. The ropes were evaluated for elongation, abrasion resistance, and ease of handling.
PS Boat Test: Tiki 30 Catamaran
Practical Sailor reviews a custom, backyard-built Tiki 30, a wood boat designed by cat-cult hero James Wharram and built by bluewater voyager Dave Martin. The real genius in the Tiki 30 is what it is missing. No lead, no liners, and no inboard engine adds up to a displacement that is so light that a low-tech, no-boom small sailplan can provide enough drive to make way in a zephyr.
Marine Electronics: PS Tests Portable Depth Sounders
Resembling small flashlights, these handheld sounders are designed to be portable, easy to use, and reliable. This series of tests took a look at the Hawkeye 22PX from Norcross Marine and the Speedtech Depthmate SM-5A. On-the-water testing comprised a series of six tests in different locations.
